Talent is a Universal Gift!

“Talent is a universal gift, but it takes a lot of courage to use it. Don’t be afraid to be the best.” ~ Paulo Coelho

The Guyanese Girls Rock Awards, an event that showcases the remarkable talents and achievements of Guyanese women, witnessed a truly unforgettable performance. Two students from the Young Women’s Leadership Academy (YWLA), Ashley Raghubar and Saniya Gajadhar, took to the stage, presenting a dance that seamlessly wove together the threads of tradition and modernity.

Their choice of song, Ellie Goulding’s “Love Me Like You Do,” might seem unconventional at first for a traditional Guyanese Hindu dance. However, it was this very choice that set the stage for an innovative performance. The song, known for its romantic and contemporary vibe, was transformed as Ashley and Saniya infused it with elements of traditional Guyanese dance, particularly those rooted in Hindu culture.

By blending a modern Western song with traditional dance, Ashley and Saniya not only showcased their talent but also paid homage to their cultural roots in a modern context. For the audience, it was a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of Guyana and how it can be beautifully integrated into contemporary forms.
