Inspiring Girls to Learn Technology….

Getting more girls to participate in technology is one of the challenges in an increasingly digital world, and DigiGirlz, Microsoft’s YouthSpark program gives middle and high school girls opportunities to learn about careers in technology, connect with Microsoft employees, and participate in hands-on computer and technology workshops.

A few weeks ago, our YWLA students attended a 2-Day DigiGirlz Tech Summit at Microsoft where they participated in several workshops, and learned about and interacted with several of the company’s products products. Day one was hosted in the Microsoft 11 Times Square office and day two was hosted in the Microsoft flagship store on 5th Avenue. Here’s a preview of some their activities.

The first day started with students learning how to code and create beats using EarSketch; an educational programming environment that teaches coding in two widely used languages, Python and JavaScript, through music composing and remixing.

Next they visited the Microsoft Technology Center where the learned about artificial intelligence and much more.  Microsoft believes that, when designed with people at the center, AI can extend your capabilities, free you up for more creative and strategic endeavors, and help you or your organization achieve more.

The third session was a Professional Development Workshop focused on networking. The girls had to write their elevator pitch to make make a presentation. Speed networking was also incorporated into the elevator pitch session.

Day 2: Junior Achievement Job Shadow – learning all about Microsoft’s People, Products and Passions.

Harnessing the Power of LinkedIn: With LinkedIn’s minimun membership age set to 13, students can get a head start in building a great LinkedIn portfolio. Thanks to the amazing trainers at Microsoft our students learned about the importance of the career social networking platform, and of the essentials for creating and maintaining a polished LinkedIn profile.

“By learning to create technology girls learn to speak up, and we certainly agree.” ~ Regina Agyare, Founder And CEO Of Soronko Solutions

The second day end with the girls having fun as the engaged in the ultimate Virtual Reality Experience.
