She Rocks! Anande Trotman-Joseph: Attorney-At-Law, Former Solicitor General of Grenada, Social Justice and Empowerment Advocate

Avril Anande Trotman–Joseph is a Guyanese-born accomplished attorney-at-law, whose career spans over twenty-five years.  She is admitted to practice by the Bars of Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana, Grenada and the British Virgin Islands.  A Founding Partner of Chapman and Trotman – Georgetown, Guyana, she was the President of the Guyana Bar Association, the Guyana Association of Women Lawyers, and the Tourism Association of Guyana and has been a consultant for USAID, UNICEF and the OAS projects in Guyana and the Caribbean.

Ms Trotman-Joseph is currently the Principal Consultant of Consultancy in Law, Governance & Rights, and Law Partner & Consulting Attorney with the Law Firm of Joseph & Joseph in Grenada. Her practice specializes in Civil, Administrative and Commercial Law. She is well known as a regional socio-legal advocate on the rule of law, constitutional reform, non discrimination and equal opportunities for women and the protection of children.

A former Solicitor General of Grenada, Ms Trotman-Joseph has also served as Chairperson of the Grenada National Coalition on the Rights of the Child, Chairperson of the Adoption Board, Commissioner of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission, and Board member of the Child Welfare Authority. She is a Registered Agent and Principal Representative of the Guyana and Trinidad Mutual Insurance Company in Grenada and is presently the Deputy Chairperson of the Integrity and Anti Corruption Commission of Grenada, a Board Member of the Caribbean Institute of Women in Leadership (CIWIL) and Advisor to the United Nations UNWOMEN in the Caribbean, on Civil Society.

Ms Trotman-Joseph received specialist legal training in the United Kingdom in the area of Child Rights and holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of the West Indies and a Masters of Law Degree (LLM) from the University of London. Ms Trotman-Joseph share with nowgrenada.com that she was inspired to pursue post graduate legal studies, so as to stay on the cutting edge of current socio-legal issues. “Given that I am also a public legal educator and advocate, who understands the correlation between law and the society, I need to stay on the cutting edge of issues,” said the Deputy Chair for Grenada Integrity Commission. She expects that her specialisation will enable her to ably contribute to the regional movement for enlightened transformational leadership required for sustainable national development, and the strengthening of the Caricom region.

Ms Trotman-Joseph recently represented the Caribbean civil society Women’s Organisations at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, during Small Island Developing States (SIDS) final global Preparatory Committee Meeting, on 23-27 June, 2014 to advocate specific gender equality positions of the Caribbean civil society network.
